The transmission is a tight fit if you have a low-hump cab - although I didn't do anything crazy with mine or the crossmember, my truck also isn't a factory automatic so I don't know for certain if the crossmember in it (which was swapped in years ago when we did a TH400 swap) is stock or not.
The engine on mine is set back a bit (probably similar to yours), I think you might need to play with your choice of exhaust manifolds to get them to clear. The headers I have actually required a bit of modification to the engine tower on the passenger side to clear.
What transmission mount setup are you using? Mine is just sitting on the classic-style rubber bushing beneath the tailshaft housing... |

Tach: Any tach with a four-cylinder setting will work since the LS1 ECM puts out a four cylinder style signal.
I haven't made any major changes since it was first done - my dad and I updated the fan shroud mounts but that's about it. All of my work on it in the forseeable future is going to be non-engine related - the shocks need to be replaced, the brakes need to be freshened, and it's at least somewhat tempting to do a five-lug conversion. I may hold off on that, though... |

In reply to the comments you left me:
1) Do you have a part number for the Hooker headers that you used?
Nope, but they're the standard Hooker shorties for a '98-'02 F-Body. They also have provisions for EGR and AIR which I've blocked off.
2) Do you have the typical problems with the headers bolts coming loose?
Nope, not at all - I don't with these and I didn't with the Sanderson headers I had on my old engine either. On top of that, my dad has run headers on his last two cars ('01 Z28, '06 Corvette) and neither one had problems either - getting a header with a nice solid flange and some good header bolts makes it work as good as the stock manifold.
3) I've heard that headers are not a big improvment on the LS1, what's your opinion?
Shorty headers like I have on my truck, no, they're not worth it and if I did this over I would've stuck with the manifolds instead, at least at first. Long-tube headers, however, are very much worth it. The problem is finding a set that fit the engine and the truck. The closest fit so far are '98-'02 Camaro long tubes, but the driver's side collector turns towards the frame. I may just end up getting a set of Pacesetters and having someone locally cut/reweld the collector on straight.
4) What route did yout take to get the battery cable to the alternator since it's on the driver's side.
Mine runs down along the radiator crossmember over to the alternator.
5) Did you stay with the original style 28" radiator?
Yeah, the factory radiator is fine as long as you get all the air out of the system. I've seen people spend way too much time trying to adapt other radiators to fit when they're not really needed.
6) And did you use an electric fan?
Yeah, if you go with an engine sourced from a car they don't have the provisions on their accessory drive to run an engine-driven fan. I actually have the stock Camaro fan shroud set up on mine - it's very similar in dimensions to the stock truck radiator, and in fact the Camaro radiator is supposedly not a difficult fit if you decide to go with it instead. If you wanted to run an engine fan you would need at least some of the accessories from a truck GenIII / IV, if not the entire accessory drive system. |
